From 20 students to 284 girls cared for
Tabantaabo opened in July 2010 with just 20 students. As more orphaned and struggling families in Burao came forward for help, enrollment grew year after year — reaching 284 girls, the most the school can currently support given its resources.
About 90% of the girls come from families below the poverty line, having lost one or both parents. Without Tabantaabo, most would have no way to attend school or meet daily needs like food, water and light.
Girls are selected from across Burao and taught in 10 classrooms by 14 teachers, following Somaliland's national curriculum alongside Islamic studies — Qur'an, the Prophet's biography and Fiqh.
